The new President of the Multiprofessional Economic Chamber (CEM) in St. Barths, Thomas GREAUX, 29 years old, has been in office for one year now (May 2020) and is firmly determined to make things change on the island.
Even more so since the beginning of the health crisis, he has been struck by the imperative need for the island to find levers to produce locally, to allow the population to consume St Barths products, without being totally dependent on the supply of external markets.
This young construction engineer returned to St Barths in 2014, and set up his engineering and project management company. After 6 years of hard work, he wishes to open up to other horizons and contribute to the evolution of the company, while continuing his activity in the building industry.
He is reviving the project of the St Barths Fishing Committee, started in 2016 by Mr. Thierry DUTOUR, former President of CEM. Missioned by the Collectivity, he is working to set up a cooperative and a Fish Market so fishermen can offer their fresh fish, in an appropriate and dedicated place. To meet this need, the CEM will create a Fishing Department within its structure and will be the trusted third party of the Collectivity to be the guarantor of the general interest.
Local agricultural production must also be developed, for fruits, vegetables and herbs. “Certainly initiatives exist today on the island, but they must be developed and supported. A program is under study, taking into account the structural handicaps of our island, namely the lack of water, space and energy resources.”Finally, local trade must also be favored. By buying from local companies, employment is supported and local guarantees are offered.
The third line of action is to take care of the environment and favor sustainable development. “This health crisis is changing our habits, especially when we travel. Taking a plane is no longer simple, and this regenerates the planet. As a result, telecommuting or remote work is developing and changing our way of working. Society is in search of meaning. We are all looking for meaning in our daily lives. At CEM, we strive to translate this evolution into the development projects we carry out.”
In order to support the local economy, the CEM in St Barthélémy will develop a ST BARTH ECOLABEL in partnership with the Collectivity, intended for all local companies on the island. “The consumer does not only buy products but also values and commitments. Education is therefore fundamental.”
With this ECOLABEL, the CEM wishes to support the economic development of companies in St Barths by making them aware of ecology, circular economy and “local” consumption.
To be followed and supported
