ZAMANA | Emmanuel de Reynal
Edition L’Harmattan
Zamana, named after a magnificent tree often regarded the king of the forest, tells the story of a tree planted in the early 19th century at the heart of a Creole estate in northern Martinique. From its rooted vantage point, the Zaman watches over generations of men and women as they come and go, shaping the life of the estate. It observes the cycles of growth and decline that drive the local economy, as well as the natural disasters—like hurricanes and the eruption of Mount Pelée—that ravage the island. With a quiet wisdom, the Zamana reflects on the curious, sometimes baffling choices humans make, seemingly disconnected from their own roots. This novel is also a touching tribute to the values of solidarity and mutual support found in the natural world.
